Things were
getting really crazy and my bad habits and lifestyle were starting
to catch up with me. Cindy was instrumental in pulling me through,
and I managed to put all of that behind me. But I was probably
still detoxing while making this record, which is really sort
of a New Wave artifact and hasn’t dated all that well.
I advocated to have Bob Clearmountain mix it, but Cindy didn’t
and regrets it to this day (as a sidebar, Cindy later married
Dan Crewe who became Bob’s manager.)
We had fun, though, and Cindy’s management was Mainman,
run by Tony DeFries, David Bowie’s manager. The staff were
colorful and interesting people, and we did a lot of touring and
television to promote the record. You could see us on American
Bandstand, Don Kirschner’s Rock Concert, Midnight Special,
etc. I now had two records on a major label as producer, both
in the same year, so I was ecstatic about that.
